What is Bb?

You may have heard of ‘cat flu’ from information given to you by your vet. Similarly to flu in people, this disease can make your pet severely ill. ‘Cat flu’, which your vet also may call Upper Respiratory Tract Disease (URTD), results mainly from viruses. The annual ‘cat flu’ vaccine your cat receives provides some protection against the disease caused by these viruses.

Even with the vaccine, however, some cats still get ‘flu’.

What we have recently learned is that ‘cat flu’ can also be caused by bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb). In some cases, ‘cat flu’ resulting from exposure to Bb can be even more dangerous than the disease caused by viruses.
